Setup Guide — RGB 472xi/474xi/478xi/478 Mxi
This guide provides quick start instructions for an experienced installer to set up and operate Extron
®
RGB 472xi/474xi/478xi/478 Mxi wall-mountable analog computer-video interfaces.
Installation

Cable and test the interface before installing it in the wall. Connectors and some controls will be inaccessible once
the interface is installed.
Step 1 — Preparing the mounting surface
a. Place the wall box against the installation surface, and mark the opening guidelines.

Use a level to mark the opening.
b. Cut out the material from the marked area.
c. Secure the wall box with 10-penny nails or #8 or #10 screws, leaving the front edge flush with the surface.
d. Run all required cables (see step 3) and secure them with cable clamps.

In order to fit in the junction box, do not install a boot on TP cables and RJ-45 connectors.
Step 2 — Power
Turn off or disconnect all equipment power sources.
Step 3 — Rear panel connections and settings

Stereo audio output connector — Connect an audio device, such as powered speakers, to this 3.5 mm, 5-pole direct insertion screw connector for
balanced or unbalanced stereo or mono audio output. Insert the wires into the connector and tighten the screws.

For unbalanced audio output, connect the sleeve(s) to the ground contact. DO NOT connect the sleeve(s) to the negative (-) contacts.

Configure the interface for stereo or mono output using rear panel DIP switch 7 (item
c
, below). When Mono is selected, the right and left inputs are combined
and placed on the left output connectors.

DIP switches — This bank of DIP switches configures
the interface as shown at right. the default position
for all switches is off (down).

Gain switch — Compensates long cable runs. Set the
switch to one of three positions as follows:
Normal (inside position) — Unity (no signal boost)
Medium (middle position) — Mid-level peaking and
gain
Maximum (outside position) — Maximum peaking
and gain, Use this setting for longer cable runs.

If the interface output cable is shorter than approximately
125 feet (38.1 m), and gain is set to medium or maximum,
the image may be overcompensated. If the image edges seem to exceed their boundaries or thin lines and sharp edges look fuzzy, reduce the gain setting.

Power connector — Connect the included 12 V power supply (or any 9 V to 24 V power supply) to the interface as shown at right.
Insert the wires into the connector and tighten the screws. Polarity is not important.

This product is intended to be supplied by a Listed Power Unit marked “Class 2” or “LPS”, rated 9 VDC to 24 VDC, 0.2 A minimum.
Always use a power supply supplied by or specified by Extron. Use of an unauthorized power supply voids all regulatory compliance
certification and may cause damage to the supply and the end product. Unless otherwise stated, the AC/DC adapters are not suitable
for use in air handling spaces or in wall cavities. The installation must always be in accordance with the applicable provisions of
National Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA 70, article 75 and the Canadian Electrical Code part 1, section 16. The power supply shall not
be permanently fixed to a building structure or similar structure.

Contact closure connector — Connect a contact closure device for remote selection of the input. Insert the wires into the connector
and tighten the screws. For contact closure control, short the pin for the desired input to the ground pin to select that device.
